CATL Retains Top AAA Rating in PV Tech’s Battery Storage Bankability Rankings

2026-10-26

On October 15, PV Tech Research published the Battery StorageTech Bankability Ratings Report, 2026 Q3 ("the Report"). Having been upgraded from the AA tier to the highest AAA rating in Q2, CATL has retained its AAA rating for Q3 2026. The rating recognizes CATL's performance in product reliability, financial strength and long-term growth potential as among the strongest in the industry.

Strong Delivery and Operations Support Top Rating

PV Tech Research, part of Informa Markets, is a research organization focused on the global solar and energy storage industries. Its bankability ratings provide a reference for evaluating energy storage suppliers and investment risks. The report assesses bankability based on a supplier's overall capabilities rather than any single product metric. CATL performed strongly across multiple areas, including project delivery, financial health, energy storage shipments, manufacturing scale and overseas production capacity.

To date, CATL has deployed over 3,000 energy storage projects worldwide, with operational data showing system reliability of more than 99%. The Report also highlights CATL's delivery of GWh-scale large energy storage projects, including Oasis de Atacama in Chile, Gemini in the United States and Collie in Australia. CATL also works with project developers and energy companies across multiple markets. Experience across markets with different climates, grid conditions and grid connection requirements demonstrates a supplier's ability to adapt its systems and deliver projects in diverse operating environments.

CATL also received a full score for manufacturing, supported by high capacity utilization rates and continued expansion of its global manufacturing footprint. According to the Report, CATL's capacity utilization rate exceeded 90% in 2025 and remained above 90% in the first half of 2026. CATL is also expanding its overseas manufacturing footprint. CATL's Debrecen plant in Hungary began trial production on September 22, 2026. Its first two production lines have entered trial operation, and the plant is designed for an annual capacity of 100 GWh.

According to SNE Research, CATL ranked first globally in energy storage battery shipments in the first half of 2026, following five consecutive years at the top of the global rankings. The Report gives CATL a financial score of 8.9 and assesses its cash flow and debt-related risks as low. This financial strength supports CATL's continued investment in R&D, capacity expansion and long-term service commitments.

Beyond operational and manufacturing strengths, CATL is also advancing system-level testing and validation of its energy storage systems. Established jointly by CATL and the Xiamen Municipal People's Government, Xiamen Energy Storage Validation Research Institute (ESVL) began operations in May 2026. The institute houses five specialized laboratories covering the Grid Integration Laboratory, High-Voltage Safety Laboratory, Thermal Safety and Combustion Laboratory, Electromagnetic Compatibility Laboratory and Environment Reliability Laboratory. System-level testing helps identify potential risks under diverse operating conditions and provides data to support equipment selection, operational management and revenue forecasting. To date, the institute has conducted testing and validation for 32 projects worldwide, covering a total energy storage station capacity of over 16 GWh.

Setting a Credit Benchmark to Bridge Energy Storage and Global Capital

For energy storage project owners, working with highly rated system suppliers can strengthen the basis for project financing.

For financial institutions, a supplier's proven operational capabilities and track record of fulfilling contractual commitments can facilitate risk assessment and communication between project sponsors and lenders. Reliable manufacturing and on-time delivery are essential to keeping projects on schedule, while long-term system reliability affects revenue forecasts over the project lifecycle.

Competition in the energy storage industry now extends beyond product specifications to a company's ability to maintain stable operations, manufacture reliably, deliver on time and provide long-term support. Project financing assessments are also expanding beyond the creditworthiness of project owners to include that of suppliers. For an industry that has long faced financing challenges, bankability ratings can serve as a practical tool for assessing supplier creditworthiness. They help investors identify reliable suppliers and encourage the industry to place greater emphasis on long-term reliability and lifecycle value.
