CATL and COSL Join Hands to Build a Benchmark OSV Project

2026-03-28

Recently, CATL and the Vessel Division of China Oilfield Services Limited (COSL) officially signed a letter of intent for cooperation. Based on the operational requirements of Offshore Support Vessels (OSVs), the two parties will jointly develop electric vessels tailored for offshore engineering and transportation operations, providing safer and more sustainable energy solutions for maritime operations.

At present, CATL has supported COSL in completing the retrofit and upgrade of "Haiyang Shiyou 545", China's first OSVs adopting an "LNG + battery energy storage" hybrid power model, and "Haiyang Shiyou 551". The energy storage systems installed on the two vessels work in precise coordination with clean energy sources through peak shaving and load balancing: charging and storing energy during periods of low electricity demand and discharging during peak demand periods, thereby effectively improving engine load efficiency and fuel utilization. After one year of operation, compared with traditional fuel-powered vessels, "Haiyang Shiyou 545" has cumulatively saved 170 tons of fuel, which translates to a cost reduction of RMB 1.45 million, and a carbon emissions cut of 535 tons. At the same time, the operating time of the main engine has been reduced by 34%, achieving coordinated improvements in energy efficiency, emissions reduction, and operational performance.

This cooperation marks an important step for CATL in advancing electrification in the offshore engineering sector, and also represents an active exploration by COSL in implementing its green and low-carbon development strategy. The two parties will work together to accelerate clean power adoption across offshore energy development and support maritime operations in moving toward a more efficient and sustainable future.
