Top in Both Horsepower and Capacity! CATL Helps the First Hydrogen-Electric Tugboat in China Set Sail

2025-07-04

Recently, Qing Dian Tuo 1, the first hydrogen-electric tugboat in China co-built by CATL, was put into service at Qingdao Port of Shandong Port Group. Utilizing CATL's innovative marine solution, Qing Dian Tuo 1 is a port tugboat with the largest horsepower and the largest lithium-battery capacity in China, and can achieve true zero-carbon emissions. The successful delivery of Qing Dian Tuo 1, as an important guarantee for the efficient operation of the port, will significantly reduce carbon emissions in port operations and set a replicable industry benchmark for the green transition of port equipment.

In the context of the global trend of port decarbonization, electric tugboats with low energy consumption and low emissions have become a key area where an important breakthrough can be made in port electrification. Tugboats can tow huge cargo ships, oil tankers, container ships, etc., and undertake key tasks such as berthing and course adjustment of ships in port operations.

CATL provides Qing Dian Tuo 1 with a marine power solution that combines high performance and a high level of safety. With a lithium battery capacity of 7,838.88 kWh, and China's highest energy density of 140 Wh/kg in the sector, as well as a maximum output power of 5,200 kW, Qing Dian Tuo 1 can support a cruising range of over 12 hours at a speed of 9 knots and achieve a maximum towing force of 82 tons to operate efficiently for long durations in rough waters. With CATL's NP (no propagation)  technology, self-developed BMS system, and millisecond-level precise control of liquid cooling thermal management, the risk of thermal runaway of cells can be blocked, ensuring the safe and stable operation of Qing Dian Tuo1 in unpredictable conditions.

In addition, after the commissioning of Qing Dian Tuo1, it is expected that CO2 emissions will be reduced by 1,500 tons per year, making the tugboat a key force in helping Qingdao Port achieve net-zero emissions.

As a global leader of new energy innovative technologies, CATL is gradually creating a zero-carbon ship solution covering multiple use cases. From the Greater Bay Area #1, China's first fuel-electric hybrid luxury sightseeing catamaran, to the Yangtze River Three Gorges #1, the world's largest pure electric tourist ship by power capacity, and the Qing DianTuo 1, China's first hydrogen-electric tugboat, CATL has successfully deployed its battery technology in numerous major demonstration projects. These projects are now widely used in sectors like tourist passenger ships, port tugboats, and inland and coastal cargo ships.

In the future, CATL will continue to drive innovation in  marine electrification solutions, working with global partners to accelerate the shipping industry's transition to zero-carbon operations.
