Exploring Battery Technology for a Shared Future of Net-Zero Carbon Emissions

2021-07-17

In the context of carbon neutrality,
how do we achieve the goal of net-zero carbon emissions?
What is the development trend of battery technology?
How do we improve the shortcomings of batteries
by taking advantage of the power of technology?
……

To this end, CATL launched the C+ New Energy Net-Zero Carbon Emissions Technology Camp from July 14 to 16. Dozens of media were invited to visit the battery production base of CATL, the world's first cell-testing laboratory certified by Volkswagen, and explore the mystery behind batteries with industrial experts through two sharing sessions.

Advancing to the era of electrification with the help of technology

How does the development of science and technology promote the era of electrification? At the sessions, Wei Yimin, director of the Digital R&D Center of CATL 21C Lab, shared his thoughts. Wei combed through the development of battery technology and reviewed the history of batteries with the media guests present. After introducing the six aspects of “authentic safety, high energy density, automatic temperature control, super-fast charging, long service life, and smart management” that batteries desirably should have, Wei also shared his thoughts on making breakthroughs in each aspect through technological innovation.

Wei said: "Excellent technology should rely on an excellent manufacturing process." At CATL, there are more than 10,000 traceable data items for a battery on average, and the big data platform has collected more than 600 billion data items. In addition, CATL is using artificial intelligence and machine learning methods to apply the latest technology to the production and control process.

Speaking of new-generation battery technologies such as solid-state batteries and sodium-ion batteries, Wei said that CATL will continue to invest in cutting-edge research and product development, pay close attention to market demand and the development of cutting-edge technologies, lead the industry with innovation and realize the commercial application of new technologies on all fronts to improve the competitiveness of products.

Battery to lead the era of net-zero carbon emissions

At present, carbon neutrality has become a global consensus. China has pledged to peak carbon emissions by 2030 and realize carbon neutrality by 2060. Liu Ziyu, manager of the Corporate Public Affairs Department of CATL, believes that the coordinated planning of the carbon chain on the power supply end and the power demand end is the key to achieve the goal of zero-carbon emissions.

On the power generation side, it is necessary to promote clean energy and build a "near-zero emission" energy system with new energy as the mainstay. Facing the challenges posed by a high proportion of renewable energy and fluctuating power loads, energy storage has become a key support for promoting energy transformation and carbon neutrality. On the power demand side, electrification in the transportation sector is accelerating its pace to replace traditional fuel vehicles with new energy vehicles in various fields. Battery technology plays a pivotal role in the energy and transportation revolutions, and is the key to achieve the goal of net-zero carbon emissions.

Liu said that in addition to helping promote clean energy and the electrification of transportation, CATL is creating a closed loop life cycle of production, use, and recycling. And it is promoting the integrated innovation of market applications with electrification and intelligentization. CATL has launched innovative solutions such as for intelligent BESS charging station, electric vessels, electric unmanned mines, to promote the electrification process in various fields.
